Velankanni is home to one of the country's biggest Catholic pilgrimage centres. The Catholic Basilica devoted to Our Lady of Good Health is popularly known as the "Lourdes of the East".[3] The origins of this church can be traced back to the 16th century.Annually, 20 million pilgrims flock to the shrine from all over India and abroad out which an estimated 3 million people visit the shrine during its annual festival from 29 August to 8 September.[3] The 11-day annual festival concludes with the celebration of the Feast of the Nativity of Mary on 8 September.

Called as mandapas or rock-cut caves the cave temples in Mahabalipuram are sanctuaries or temples covered with bas-reliefs. Traces of such architecture are known to have been used during the Buddhist period. Much similar cave architecture was excavated on rock faces. There are eleven mandapas in Mahabalipuram out of which the Varaha Cave Temple, Krishna Cave Temple, Panchapandava Cave Temple are noted ones. An impressive sculpture panels on the walls of the Mahsisuramardhini Cave Temple has the goddess Durga depicted as killing a demon with a buffalos head. The sculptures realism and artistic elegance is an achievement in itself. You will find many incomplete remnants near the caves from the Pallava period.

Nagore Dargah is located in Nagore, 15 kms from Velankanni. Nagore Dargah built over the tomb of Sufi saint Shahul Hamid. The dargah is major pilgrim centre in the region attracts pilgrims from both Islam and Hindus.
